I have said this before, but Pittsburgh is pretty unique and awesome. This time, it involves a giant rubber duck. Yes you read that correctly, a giant rubber duck. The Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman created a giant rubber duck sculpture that "creates a sense of healing because it has no frontiers, it doesn't discriminate, and doesn't have a political connotation. “We are living on one planet,” he told WESA Pittsburgh, “and all the waters in the world become our global bathtub, so we are one family where we have to take care of each other in this bathtub of the rubber duck.”
The duck's arrival marks the start of the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts -- and is the first time one of the ducks has bobbed in U.S. waters. In true Pittsburgh fashion, there was a giant welcoming party on one of the closed down bridges which brought hundreds of people out to witness this magnificent and silly piece of art. And it did not disappoint.
With it's three rivers, Pittsburgh is the perfect place for the duck to make it's American debut. It has been anchored by on the river right by the fountain in Point State Park. I first saw the duck from afar while driving through the city. From far away it looks kind of ridiculous and small, I thought. However, this past week, when on a run with my friend Angela*, we finally got an up-close-and-personal view of the duck. There were an absurd amount of people out just to see the duck. It is massive standing close to it. It is such a strange thing to see just sitting on the river but now, it's absence will be strange.
