Yes, this post is a little late, but I have to post about it. Do you know what yarn-bombing is? It's a type of street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk. Examples of this have been covered tree trunks, covered light poles, covered statues, and as of recent, an entire covered bridge.
Enter the Knit the Bridge. "Knit the Bridge is a grassroots, community-led arts project that brings the many diverse communities of Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania together to create a large-scale, aesthetically stunning, fiberarts installation on the Andy Warhol/7th Street Bridge. The installation will be on view from August 12th until September 6th, 2013."
Since Pittsburgh is a growing, innovative city, it sometimes has the rare ability to do something on a grandeur scale in unique locations. I mean, in what other city could you do this? I made my way down a couple of times to see the bridge up close and personal. All of the panels that were knitted or crocheted were donated to local homeless shelters after the installation came down.
There was a celebration of the completion of the installation with food and live music and the even an hour of yoga. Yes, yoga on the bridge. The local Lululemon stores teamed up with the Knit the Bridge community and came up with "Yarn and Yoga" where about 500 people, including myself!, did yoga on the bridge.
Pittsburgh: you're rad.
