daily jam, all time low

After seeing them again over the weekend, All Time Low obviously would be today's daily jam. Their post-punk style became popular when I was in high school and really hasn't gone away with time. (I'm completely okay with it). This is one of my favorite songs by them, especially when you need to blow off some steam. Their videos are always fun and not so secretly make you wish you that you could pull off the emo swoop and be in a band. The best part, in my opinion, is that Pete Wentz and Mark Hoppus are tweeting about who is ripping off who, and it always come back to Blink. Enjoy the video and song below.

concert series-- all time low

I live for live music. If I could afford it, I would be at a show every night of the week. This spring/summer has an awesome line up of shows coming to Pittsburgh and I am pretty geeked about it. Bands that I fell in love with in high school are touring again, as well as some new groups that I am excited to see for the first time. I'm starting this little concert series as a recap of the shows I go to, as well as a record of what concerts I actually went to. When you see as many bands as I do, they all tend run together in my mind; this will be a way of organizing my thoughts and pictures.

The first installment in the concert series is All Time Low. I first found the band when I was in college and listen to them still quite frequently. I have seen them a handful of times, one time being at Pitt for Bigelow Bash for free. What I love about them is they sound fantastic live and in between songs they have hilarious banter (its mostly penis jokes, but funny nonetheless) and the amount of girls who come to the shows and toss bras on the stage is quite comical. This tour was the #SpringFever Tour and included You Me At SixMayDay Parade, and was co-headlined with Pierce the Veil

The concert was outside at Stage AE and who would have thought that the 3rd weekend in April would be freaking freezing! I ended buying a You Me At Six hat just to keep myself warm. Brilliant idea by the way, considering a bunch of people were seen wearing the hats as well. What I found amusing was that we were not in attendance to actually see YMAS play live, yet I have their hat.

MayDay Parade played an awesome set to open for Pierce The Veil. It had been awhile since I have listened to MayDay but I enjoyed it just the same. The lead singer had me questioning how these emo boys fit into those skinny jeans though. My god, eat something! However, because of this scene at the show, my love of lip-rings has returned. Watch out.

I never heard of Pierce The Veil (I did a really great job of paying attention to what concert I was going to right?). But was pleasantly surprised by their sound. It reminded me of a better sounding Breathe Carolina, at least by the vocals. They had a better stage presence as well, exemplified by the various times they shot neon colored confetti into the air.

I was surprised by the amount of people who left after Pierce the Veil finished their set. It felt like we were waiting forever for ATL to come on the stage. And once they did, I couldn't stop singing and smiling from ear to ear. They played some new songs from their new album Don't Panic, but the old standby's will forever and always be my favorites. For their encore song, which was obviously "Dear Maria", Jack pulled up some 15 year old kid to sing with them. It was awesome and completely made that kid's life. And for the record, yes, I am insanely jealous of him.

So cold but my You Me At Six hat is so cute #pompom

All Time Low finally playing in the freezing cold

book of mormon

When I heard Book of Mormon was coming to Pittsburgh back in September, I knew I had to get tickets. Every time I've gone to NYC, I've tried, although unsuccessful, to get tickets, to see this critically acclaimed musical. I warned my parents and their Catholic, conservative friends who were coming with us, that this might offend them, just a little bit. Best friend Renee came with me as well and we absolutely enjoyed this little musical about the church of the latter day saints. We were laughing the entire time, 3 times in particular I was in stitches. My favorite part was the "Turn it Off" segment which includes pink sequinned vests and tap dancing. Since seeing the show, I find myself YouTube-ing songs from the musical and just laughing as I listen. The creators/writers of South Park really outdid themselves with this masterpiece they put on Broadway. After finallllly seeing it, I can now understand why they won so many Tony Awards. It is unlike anything that was ever on Broadway. Many people left the performance at intermission because they were offended. I didn't think it was THAT terrible, but it definitely pushed the envelope (lots of swearing, talk of rape, and just a lot of wildly inappropriate behavior in general) but I found it freaking hilarious. Even my dad was laughing a lot, and that's a note worth making.

daily jam, young rapids

Today's daily jam is Young Rapids. While in DC, we met up with my friend Colin who lives in Virginia. He told us that his friends band was playing and that we should stop by and check out the scene. It was in a gallery space, filled with hipsters wearing scarves, but I felt at home. The music was beyond awesome, Grizzly Bear-esqe but somehow all their own at the same time. I instantly became obsessed with the group and actually went to see them again when they came to Pittsburgh. Check out their song Mind Drug below and definitely check them out live if you can.

DC trip

I am always up for a quick trip. When my best friend Renee asked if I wanted to go somewhere with her during her spring break, my response wasn't 'yes or no', it was "where are we going?!".  Renee chose DC and I was completely on board. It was perfect timing too because we were going to be there during the Cherry Blossom festival (which I have never experienced before so I was geeked).  We flew (which is hilarious because the flight was maybe 35 mins) and stayed just outside DuPont Circle at the Beacon Hotel. We spent most of our days sightseeing and getting bumped into by 12 year old twerps with matching T-shirts on field trips. That part was kind of annoying but the pros definitely outweighed the cons. We got to catch up with old friends and make new friends (I'm looking at you Anna), eat and drink at great new places, and of course, a cupcake. We realized after the fact, but Renee and I took zero pictures together. But below are some pictures from the trip.

The trip started off with mimosas in the airport
We had to stop by Barry and Shelly's house obviously,
they were setting up for the Easter Egg Roll

The only picture of my face from the whole trip

Madhatter is an Alice in Wonderland themed restaurant
which I was nerding out on. The food was amazing and their
homemade tea is phenomenal, I could drink it everyday.
Saw an awesome funk band on M Street

And of course, getting the BEST cupcake and latte in the city at Baked and Wired.

travel tips

Things I have learned from my amazing trip to Turks and Caicos.

Always take a credit card no matter if your parents say it’s a bad idea. How else will you pay for drinks or snacks or Wi-Fi on the plane? (Note:  if you make friends with the flight attendant while being seated in the exit row, you sometimes get free drinks. Just saying…)

Always charge your phone, even if it is just for 10 minutes. I tell you this because when coming home from paradise, our flight landed in Charlotte where it just so happened to be snowing. Now, having 2 hours until my next flight home, you would have thought I would have found a nice cozy spot next to an outlet right? Wrong. I had just enough juice left in my phone to last me the 2 hour wait for an hour flight back to Pittsburgh. And that would have been fine if dear old southern Charlotte knew how to deal with snow. I say this because even though it continued to snow, our flight was never delayed, not by a minute. But oh don’t worry, we got onto the plane and proceeded to sit on the runway for 3 and half hours while it continued to snow outside. I used my phone to call my parents various times and tried unsuccessfully to download and buy TV shows and movies via iTunes and Amazon Instant Play. Guess what? You need Wi-Fi for those things to happen. Guess what again? Airplanes don’t use Wi-Fi if the pane is under 100 feet. Curse you Internet Gods!! So this called for a bit of creativity on my part to keep myself from going insane. Thankfully, I had the window seat or this would have been a more miserable story. However, I managed to remember that I had Netflix (Bud you are a freaking lifesaver!!!) on my phone and it works without Wi-Fi. The older gentlemen next to me, with the help of subtitles while I had headphones in, managed to watch two episodes of Doctor Who before my phone got to 10% battery left. I wanted to make sure I had enough power to be able to text my parents when I got home since it would be late. But oh don’t you fret friend, we watched those two episodes and still did NOT take off yet. Thankfully I am a music fiend and still carry around an iPod along with my iPhone and could watch about 40% of The Devil Wears Prada. Finally, we were taking off after having to deice the plane for 20 minutes. Mid flight, I turned on my Kindle and continued to read Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter for the rest of the duration of the flight. The runway had a good 2 inches of snow on it but we landed anyway. See that Charlotte, not afraid of snow and airplanes together. But god did that cold air make me yearn for the beaches we just left. Anyway, Lesson learned here: always charge all of your devices even if it is only for 8 minutes because only two episodes of Doctor Who are never enough.

Magazines over books-I am an avid reader and a huge fan of both actual books and e-books. I always have my kindle with me. But I found that short articles are better for the short attention span when reading on a raft in the middle of a pool. Vanity Fair and Time proved to have the best stories if you ask me.
Always bring kid friendly snacks: I am always around kids on flights. Never right next to me, no, always freaking behind me kicking my chair or shoving their tray table into the back of my seat. Not fun at all. BUT, if you have treats, (mind you I always ask their parents first) to share with the kiddos, it kinda shuts them up and is a bargaining tool to keep them from kicking your seat.

Neck pillow: Get one and always bring it. Looks ridiculous, but soo worth the investment.
